TB Testing
TB skin testing on the Halifax waterfront.
The TB (tuberculosis) skin test — also known as the Mantoux or PPD test — checks whether you have been exposed to the bacteria that causes TB. It's commonly required for employment, healthcare placements, school programs, volunteer positions, immigration requirements, and other screening purposes.
Administered by our trained pharmacists in a private clinical setting, by appointment. TB skin test — $55.
How it works
One test, two visits.
The TB skin test requires two appointments — the test can't be interpreted without the second one.
Test administration
A small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) is placed just beneath the skin of your forearm. The injection site forms a small raised area, and you'll leave with simple instructions on caring for it before your follow-up.
Test reading — 48–72 hours later
A pharmacist examines the injection site and documents the result. You must return within 48–72 hours of the test being placed — outside that window it can't be accurately interpreted and may need to be repeated. If you have a family doctor or nurse practitioner, we send them a record of your result.
Your appointment
What to expect at your visit.
During your TB testing appointment, the pharmacist will:
- Review your medical history and complete a TB screening questionnaire.
- Assess for previous positive TB tests, previous TB infection, BCG vaccination history, and potential risk factors.
- Administer the PPD test just beneath the skin of your forearm.
- Provide instructions on how to care for the test site while waiting for your follow-up visit.
- Schedule your return appointment for the TB test reading.
